As always, SPOILERS AHEAD!
Season 8 episode 4 of Game of Thrones saw our heroes regroup from The Long Night where some of our favorites are now gone and burned and it’s time to focus on the last war, against none other than Cersei Lannister.
Before this the remaining heroes gather to mourn the dead in the great hall of Winterfell.
Below are some of the OMG! moments throughout episode 4.
1. JON SNOW AND DAENARYS
Jon or now known as Aegon struggle to keep his identity a secret. Having grown up as a Targaryen, Danny is unphased by her eh….kinship to Jon Snow and wishes for everything to return as it had been. Jon however is finding it hard to separate his promise to Danny after bending the knee to serve as his Queen and his personal feelings for her. This isn’t the first time incest has been a topic on this show and it is not any less shocking when it happens. Oh boy!
Danny tries to persuade Jon from revealing who he truly is to anyone lest it threatens her claim to the throne as he is the true heir of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Knowing nothing as he knows, Jon believes revealing his identity will have no impact on Danny or her claim to the throne or change the will of the people in who they want their Queen to be. Danny rightfully claims that given the choice, Jon’s opinion wouldn’t matter and his identity would only stir her enemies. Guess what Jon does anyways?
2. JON SNOW REVEALS HIS IDENTITY TO ARYA AND SANSA
After swearing his “sisters” to secrecy Jon bequests Bran to divulge his true identity. Keeping the secret for a mere 10 minutes…Sansa chooses to use this information, a skill she’s apparently learned from Little Finger, to try to weaken Daenarys’ power. She divulges the information to Tyrion, hand to Danny, who later confides in Varys (who also already knew). This leads them to question their loyalty to Danny who is increasingly taking on traits of her father, the mad king.
3. THE AMBUSH FROM EURON GREYJOY
After news of the triumph over the Night King by the North, Euron Greyjoy lays in ambush. Knowing the next course of action of Daenarys’ army will be marching down to Kings Landing to reclaim the iron throne, his ships attack the weakened army with the Iron Fleet. In doing so, he mortally wounds Rhaegal, distroys Danny’s ships and captures Missandei. Love him or hate his, he’s been getting the job done for Cersei. He hasn’t failed her yet.
4. THE DEATH OF RHAEGAL
Wounded and vulnerable from the battle with the Night King, Rhaegal and Drogon (with Danny aboard) fly ahead of her fleet to Kings Landing. Weakened, Rhaegal is unable to successfully dodge the scorpions (giant harpoons) mounted on the Iron Fleet during their ambush, mortally wounding him. Distressed and seething with rage, Danny attempts to take on the fleet but withdraws leaving her child to sink beneath the Ocean. And then there was one.
5. DISCUSSIONS OF TREASON FROM TYRION AND VARYS
As advisors to Daenarys Targaryen, Tyrion and Varys discuss their hot-tempered Queen. Knowing the true lineage of Jon Snow, they contemplate a better ruler when Danny seems hellbent on destroying Kings Landing, its people and most of all Cersei for the murder of her dragon Rhaegal and the kidnapping of Missandei. Varys muses that Jon would be a better ruler citing his level-headed demeanor and committment to his people and his word. Tyrion however, is adamant he will serve his Queen and if not proposes marrying the two so they may share the throne. Varys’ suggestion at protecting the realm no matter the cost suggests he’s willing to switch sides in order to bring peace to the seven kingdoms.
6. THE DEATH OF MISSANDEI
Captured after Euron Greyjoy’s ambush, Missandei is delivered to Cersei in the capital city of Kings Landing. There, she is held prisoner and used as a hostage and bargaining chip calling for the unconditional surrender of Daenarys’ army. Refusing to do so, lest she face the Dragon Queen’s wrath, Danny counters with the unconditional surrender of Cersei’s forces. Having an effect weapon against her dragon, weakening her fleet and with half her army decimated, Cersei decides to take her chances with battle much to the chagrin of Tyrion who wishes to avoid blood shed. Looking on at Danny and Greyworm, Missandei declares her last word, “Dracarys” as she’s beheaded by the Mountain.
